Exceptional Antique Continental European Octagonal Religious Painting of the “Anima Solas”
An exceptional and well executed antique continental European religious octagonal painting, 19th century or possibly earlier. This religious artwork is layered with symbolic and allegorical imagery. Near the top of the painting Mary is depicted holding the child Jesus while both have their arms open, welcoming the animas sola, or lonely ancestral souls depicted at the bottom of the painting who are hoping for salvation while awaiting judgement amidst the flames of purgatory. In the center we see an angel lifting up the souls that have been judged and that have been cleansed by a figure depicting a grown Jesus holding his staff and pouring water over the souls so that they are cleansed and can ascend to heaven.
