Large 20″ Antique 19th C Russian Silver Over Copper Repousse Icon

$1,095.00

A very good and fine antique 19th century Russian silver over copper repousse icon having a heavily hammered oklad depicting a biblical scene with the tree of life being a central part of the scene, the whole mounted on a wooden cloth covered panel. This is a very beautiful and interesting icon, especially given its large size and fine repousse details; this is one of the nicest quality that I have come across!

Especially unique and special is the tree of life that is central to the icon where one can clearly see numerous small acorns, reminding one that as Thomas Fuller’s in his Gnomologia, from 1732, stated that, “The greatest Oaks have been little Acorns.”, or an even earlier variant of this ‘mighty oaks from little acorns grow’ are found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde, dated 1374.

Come take a look at this wonderful piece in person at our historic showroom located at 137 Stockton St., Hightstown, NJ 08520!

The Difference: At Musing Antiques LLC, we know how difficult it is to purchase antiques online. This is why, from our beginnings in 2002, we place such a high priority in taking clear pictures of the item for sale and in taking numerous close-ups so that you, the customer, can accurately assess the beauty and condition of the piece. Pieces that are over 100 years of age naturally have age wear and this is common. What is not so common and what distinguishes us from other antique dealers is that we actually take close-ups of these “age marks” and include them in our listings so that you know exactly what you are buying! Our philosophy has from the beginning been one of honesty, integrity, and transparency! We hope that the numerous pictures will be of help to you and serve to make shopping at Musing Antiques LLC a pleasurable experience! – Dimitri Musing, Founder.
