A stunning 17th / 18th century oil on canvas Dutch painting in the manner / style of Aert van der Neer depicting a river landscape by moonlight, unsigned.
Aert van der Neer (Dutch, 1603-1677)
Aert van der Neer specialized in canal and river landscapes by the light of sunset / early dawn or most famous of all by moonlight. He was a master at representing light and his ability to capture a sense sense of space and atmosphere. Although he was not recognized in his own time, experts praise his work.
Van der Neer started painting rather late in life, in his late 20’s. Like many painters throughout history, he was not recognized during his own time and painting did not bring financial success. Later in his life, between 1658-1659, he opened a tavern with his son. This ended in bankruptcy in 1662 whereafter Van der Neer continued to paint, in extreme poverty, until his death in 1677.
